Time zones and invigilatorPlus

Information for institutions with staff or students based in more than one time zone.

Time zones can be set for individual staff and student accounts. These time zones should be based upon the individual’s primary location.

Exam times are displayed at times based upon the staff or student’s specified location in their account. For example: A university has campuses in Melbourne and Perth. Students from both campuses sit the same exam simultaneously in July – starting at 10:00 AM in Melbourne and 8:00 AM in Perth. The exam start time shown to staff and students based in Melbourne will be displayed as 10:00 AM. The exam start time shown to staff and students based in Perth will be displayed as 8:00 AM. Staff and students do not have to convert any times.

If a student is based in Melbourne and their time zone is set to (UTC+10:00) Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney, but travels to Perth and sits the exam while in Perth, the exam start time will display as 10:00 AM (Melbourne time) and they will need to remember the 2-hour difference.

Staff creating Exams should use the start times and dates matching the specified time zone location in their account. No time adjustments are required when creating an Exam for a future date which will occur in different time zone but in the same location. For example: In September (AEST) a staff member in Sydney is creating an Exam for a Sydney campus which will start at 5:00 PM 20 October, which is after Daylight Savings (AEDT) has commenced. The staff member does not need to make any adjustments to the Exam Start Time: they enter it as 5:00 PM.

The same staff member then creates an Exam to take place in Perth starting at 5:00 PM 20 October. As they are not based in the same time zone as Perth, they do need to adjust the Exam Start Time to match the time it would start where they are based in Sydney: 8:00 PM.
